Texas Selects Two Katy ISD Principals as Texas National Distinguished Principal Finalists

TESPA (The Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association) has nominated five Houston Metro Area principals as finalists for the Texas National Distinguished Principal awards.

Among those outstanding academic leaders were two principals from Katy Independent School District: Dr. Doreen Martinez of Memorial Parkway Elementary and Dr. William Rhodes of Bryant Elementary.

In May of 2021, just one of these five finalists will be honored as the Texas National Distinguished Principal of the year. The honoree will be taking home $10,000 while earning the opportuity to represent their school and the state of Texas at the 2021 NDP Gala in Washington D.C.

TESPA received 137 total nominations from principals across the state of Texas. The association had a rigorous review process for these applicants, which involved an in-depth analysis of their educational philosophies and professional accomplishments. Afterward, they assembled a peer-review committee to evaluate and select the finalists. In the coming weeks, these outstanding educational leaders will showcase their achievements and hard work to a team of educators, via a virtual visit to each of their respective schools.

The Assistant Superintendent for School Leadership and Support, Dawn Carlson-Scruggs, stated that Katy ISD has built a reputation for itself as having some of the best school leaders and educators in the nation. Both esteemed Katy ISD principals are known for their creative and innovative approaches toward educating their students. Katy is proud to see these finalists represent their district in this event.
