Katy ISD Named One of the Best Communities for Music Education

The Young Ranch Community would like to recognize Katy ISD’s achievement of being named as one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation for 2019 once again. This award means that Katy ISD as a school district has committed to teaching music education with the highest standards to show how important music is for a well-rounded education.

Music develops important skills that have been found to correlate directly with academic achievement, according to, “The Impact of Music Education on Academic Achievement.” Music also helps develop students creatively, culturally, and academically according to Katy ISD’s executive director of fine arts, Michael Oullette. To learn an instrument takes concentration, focus, and discipline. For students to become musicians with the ability to create melodies and tunes, they had to have understood the basics of that instrument completely before expanding into other skillsets. Students learn how to sight read on a music sheet before they can play a musical piece on an instrument. Before that, students have to learn how to play the basic scale on their instruments before they begin to play the notes on a music sheet. Once students understand those vital basics, they will know exactly which notes to play and how to play them all while keeping their eyes on the music sheet. This note conversion process is the most difficult for many people, which is why it is an amazing accomplishment for Katy ISD.
