Katy ISD Board Calls for $676 Million Bond Election in May

Over $670 million worth of upgrades, renovations, and new facilities may be in store for Katy Independent School District, all pending the results of a bond election this coming May.

The proposal for this bond package was developed by the 110 members of the Community Bond Advisory Committee (CBAC), and recommended by KISD CCO Andrea Grooms.

Grooms stated the reason they are considering this bond package is in response to the rapid growth in the community, primarily in the school district’s student population. The KISD’s demographic consultants project the student population will grow from its current size of 84,000 to 115,000 students as soon as 2030.

The combination of aging campuses and growing student populations have brought the consideration of this bond package to the forefront.

The Community Bond Advisory Committee held three meetings in January, in which KISD representatives presented the need for campus renovations, updates, and expansion. After the meetings and presentations, the committee members debated the need for the four-pronged bond package.

Following this discussion, CBAC members ended up supporting the package by more than a two-thirds vote.

The bond package consists of four propositions:

  • Proposition A: $591,368,568 allocated to new schools, renovations, safety, security, and building component replacements.
  • Proposition B: $59,755,242 allocated to campus and classroom technology.
  • Proposition C: $13,842,610 for pools/natatoriums.
  • Proposition D: $11,260,000 for campus and district athletic facilities and stadiums, including component replacements and repairs.

If approved by voters this coming May, this would finance a new junior high, high school, and three elementary schools, as well as expansion and renovations for older campuses in the area. It would result in the creation of around 7,500 new seats in classrooms throughout the district.

Early voting for this bond referendum runs April 19-27. Election day will be held on May 1st. Visit https://www.katyisd.org/sites/bonds/Pages/default.aspx to learn more about the district’s bond proposal.
